Esoteric Ebb

In this episode of Pixelated Playgrounds, Bryan and Josh head to the polls in Esoteric Ebb! Developed by Swedish solo developer Christoffer Bodegård and published by Raw Fury, Esoteric Ebb is a narrative RPG set five days before the first democratic election in the island city of Norvik. You play as the world's worst cleric, freshly resurrected, memory fragmented, and somehow tasked with investigating a mysterious explosion at a tea shop. With a goblin sidekick in tow and a head full of bickering D&D stats, you're off to unravel a political conspiracy that goes much deeper than any tea shop has a right to.

The game wears its Disco Elysium influences openly, translating D&D attributes into a chorus of competing inner voices, each one aligned with a different political faction and ideology. But where Disco leaned into grim darkness as its entry point, Esoteric Ebb leads with warmth, wit, and Pratchett-esque absurdity only to reveal real emotional and political depth underneath. The result of eight years of development and over 1.25 million words, it's a deeply authored world that still rewards curiosity, creativity, and the occasional catastrophic decision. Listen in as Bryan and Josh dig into what makes Esoteric Ebb tick: its tone and comedy, its debt to and departures from Disco Elysium, its bespoke fantasy setting, its surprisingly moving characters, and whether it represents a new chapter for the narrative RPG genre. Does it earn its place in that lineage? Have Bryan or Josh ever met a side quest they didn't immediately accept? Listen in and cast your vote!
